  • Dr Marc Lanteigne, Chair of Victoria University's China Research Center, Delivers a Series of Guest Lectures at Peking University

    21/04/2014 - Dr Lanteigne, Chair of Victoria University's China Research Center, provided a short lecture series on international relations in the Pacific arena, with assistance from the New Zealand Centre.

    Invited by the Office of International Relations and the New Zealand Centre, Dr. Marc Lanteigne, the Chair of the China Research Centre, and Senior lecturer of the School of History, Victoria University of Wellington, visited Peking and delivered the lectures: “China and the South Pacific: Soft Balancing?”and “North Dreams: Chinese and Asian Interests in the Arctic”on April 21 and April 24, 2014.

    Dr. Lanteigne's research focuses on the rise of China as a strategic and economic power as well as its evolving interactions and engagements with international organizations and regimes. He has written books, Chinese Foreign Policy, and The Chinese Party-State in the 21st Century, and many articles on research of China and Asia-pacific region. During 2012-2013, he was the academic instructor of “Intercultural Leadership” Summer Course, PKU-Victoria University of Wellington.

    On April 21, Dr. Lanteigne delivered the lecture “China and the South Pacific: Soft Balancing?”at PKU. After first introducing the history and change of Chinese people’s life in South Pacific, he discussed signs and indications of soft balancing in South Pacific region. Then he focused on deliberating cares and fears of soft balancing in traditional regionalpowers, Australia, and New Zealand. With abundant historical resources as well as his experiences as a visitor to Chinese embassies in many Pacific countries, Dr. Marc carried on the thorough elaboration on relevant issues.

    Dr. Lanteigne has published the following books and papers on China's international relations:

    The Chinese Party-State in the 21st Century: Adaptation and the Reinvention of Legitimacy ed. with Andre Laliberte (London and New York: Routledge, 2008)

    China and International Institutions: Alternate Paths to Global Power (London and New York: Routledge, 2005)

    The East China Sea' and 'The South China Sea', Border Disputes: A Global Encyclopedia, ed. Alexander Bukh, (ABC Clio, forthcoming 2014).

    Dr. Lanteigne's research focuses on the rise of China as a strategic and economic power as well as its evolving interactions and engagements with international organisations and regimes. His regional interests lie in Northeast Asia and Central Asia and interactions between the two. These have encompassed regional-level cases including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the East Asian Summit and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. More recently, Marc's work has looked at the increasing evolution of Chinese power in the area of commercial diplomacy and the ability to translate economic power into other forms. This research has encouraged further study on a rich variety of topic areas relevant not only to China studies but also to international relations theory as a whole.

    On April 24, Dr. Marc Lanteigne gave the talk “Northern Dreams: Chinese and Asian Interests in the Arctic”. Discussing global warming, he emphasized that it became possible to exploit Arctic resources and open up new channels. As a result, the interests competition among the countries in the Northern hemisphere was intensive. Based on his experiences as a visitor to the Arctic, such as Iceland and Denmark, in 2013, Dr Marc presented a chart of the Arctic and its relevant complexed international relations to audience. During the talk, he paid attention to Chinese benefits in the Arctic, and analyzed the situation of China and the competitors China faces.
