  • Xu Haolun Named UC Alumni Ambassador for China

20/05/2022-Mr. Xu Haolun, a Peking University employee was named an alumni ambassador of the University of Canterbury (UC) for China in May 2022.

Mr. Xu Haolun, a deputy editor-in-chief of the Office of Global Communications at Peking University (PKU), was named an alumni ambassador of the University of Canterbury (UC) for China in May 2022, whose responsibility is to work with the Alumni and UC Foundation team to support alumni relations activities in China. For years, Mr. Xu has been working closely with New Zealand Centre at Peking University ever since he joined Peking University.

After graduating from UC with a master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy years ago, Mr. Xu started his career as a global communications officer at the Office of Global Communications of PKU in Beijing, running the university’s overseas social media platforms within a dynamic team of four, as well as promoting educational exchanges between New Zealand and China through New Zealand Centre at Peking University. During the 123rd anniversary month of PKU in 2021, Mr. Xu worked with the New Zealand Embassy to China and conducted an interview with H.E. Ambassador Clare Fearnley and Science and Innovation Counsellor Mr. Clinton Watson, both of whom are PKU alumni, having the two guests to share their PKU experiences. In December 2020, Mr. Xu was promoted Deputy Editor-in-Chief in the office’s overseas social media team.

Prior to joining PKU, Mr. Xu had lived in New Zealand for seven years since the age of sixteen. As a teenager studying abroad alone, he went through obstacles and challenging times, yet he received immense support from friends, teachers and even acquaintances, making him feel that he was just home away from home. Because of the overall positive experience, he does not only see New Zealand as a country with the unique beauty of magnificent landscapes, but also a multicultural society prosperous with sustainable development, where people respect differences and empower each other with friendly gestures.

With the richness of experiences in both China and New Zealand, Mr. Xu is incentivised to bridge cultural exchanges between New Zealand and China, in the hope that New Zealanders can have positive experiences while visiting or living in China and vice versa. Being able to serve as an alumni ambassador of the University of Canterbury (UC) for China is the first step that Mr. Xu proudly takes to achieve his goal, and he always strives to do more.
