  • Professor Tek Tjing Lie presents at Peking University

12/09/2019 - Auckland University of Technology’s professor of electric engineering, Tek Lie visited Peking University for the first time through the New Zealand Centre Fellowship. This opportunity allowed him to share his ideas on managing risks to nation-wide electric grids, and also take in ideas from Peking University scholars on energy production and global distribution. He was hosted by Professor Guoqian Chen, from the Laboratory of Systems Ecology and Sustainable Science, Department of Energy and Resources Engineering, College of Engineering at Peking University.

Professor Lie arrived on the 9th of September for a five-day stay in Beijing through the New Zealand Centre Fellowship.  Auckland University of Technology has enjoyed a long-term research collaboration on the development of clean energy technologies with scholars from Chinese universities. The key to his visit was to expand this collaboration to Peking University and other Chinese universities. This connection is especially auspicious to both countries due to their vastly different systems of energy production and distribution. As a result, new solutions and ways of thinking can be shared.

On 12th September Professor Lie gave his presentation entitled “Solutions for Managing Risks Posed by Fast-Paced Changes in Smart Grid Technology”. He highlighted that blackouts cannot be eliminated in such a complex and interconnected system, yet the objective is to “keep the lights on” and advancements are always being made to reduce likelihood of blackouts. Other focuses are affordability and becoming carbon zero; which New Zealand hopes to achieve by 2050 driven by the Zero Carbon Act.

Following Professor Lie’s presentation, both Professor Guoqian Chen and his postdoctoral student Dr Xudong Wu gave a presentation to share their ideas. Professor Guoqian Chen who has extensively published is from the Laboratory of Systems Ecology and Sustainable Science, College of Engineering at Peking University. Professor Lie said “from the visit I have learned that the impact on the environment due to renewable resources is also very important to consider”. Such ideas broaden the spectrum of thinking and promote innovative research.

Aside from strengthening connections to Peking University, Professor Lie also met with Professor Wendong Xiao from the University of Science and Technology Beijing. The meeting allowed them to discuss the possibility of an internship exchange for PHD students to Auckland University of Technology.
