  • The New Zealand Centre (NZC) at Peking University extends warm congratulations to the ten recipients selected the 2017 Visiting Fellows as determined by the Advisory Board of the NZC. The recipients for this year are as follows: Dr Liyin Liang, Dr Jeremy Piggott, Dr Boyang Ding, Dr David Gruber, AP Barry Wu, Dr Liangni (Sally) Liu, AP Michaela Balzarova, Dr Zhi Dong, Prof. Nikola Kasabov and AP Sharyn Davies.

    The purpose of the Visiting Fellowship is to advance the NZC’s mission to be a major nexus of academic, political, business and cultural collaboration between New Zealand and China. Each fellow delivers one or more public lectures or seminars, and collaborates with academic colleagues at Peking University for the promotion of mutual research.

     

    The Visiting Fellows for 2017 in order of their scheduled arrival at Peking University:

     

    1. Dr Liyin Liang

    Dr Liyin Liang is a research fellow from the School of Science at the University of Waikato. He will be hosted by Professor Shilong Piao from the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University.

     

    2. Dr Jeremy Piggot

    Dr Jeremy Piggott is a research fellow from the Department of Zoology at the University of Otago. He will be hosted by Professor Yi Huang from the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University.

     

    3. Dr Boyang Ding

    Dr Boyang Ding is a post-doctoral fellow from the Physics Department at the University of Otago. He will be delivering a public lecture on nanophotonics (manipulating light at the light scale) and a seminar on the design, fabrication and properties of nanophotonic resonators. Dr Ding will be hosted by Professor Yanfeng Zhang from the Department of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, College of Engineering, Peking University.

     

    4. Dr David Gruber

    Dr David Gruber is a senior lecturer at the School of English and Media Studies from Massy University. He will be delivering a public lecture discussing the neuroscience in our lives (including the rise of neuro-industry and the role of cultural neuroscience) and a seminar on gaps and interventions with neuroscience communication. Dr Gruber will be hosted by Professor Jing Wu from the School of Journalism and Communications, Peking University.

     

    5. Dr Barry Wu

    Associate Professor Barry Wu is a senior research engineer at the Wireless Research Centre from the University of Canterbury. AP Wu will be hosted by Professor Kaigui Bian from the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Peking University.

     

    6. Liangni Sally Liu

    Dr Liangni Sally Liu is a lecturer from the School of Humanities, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Massey University. She will be delivering a public lecture entitled ‘New Chinese Immigration to New Zealand: Policies, Immigration Patterns, Mobility and Perception,’ and a seminar addressing New Zealand’s changing policy in family sponsorship immigration and its impact on Chinese migrant families from China. Dr Liu will be hosted by Professor Wu Xiao An from the Centre for the Studies of Chinese Overseas and the Department of History, Peking University.

     

    7. Associate Professor Michaela Balzarova

    Associate Professor Michaela Balzarova is an associate Professor in the Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship Department at the University of Canterbury.She will be hosted by ProfessorShiqiu Zhang from the Department of Environmental Management, Peking University.

     

    8. Dr Zhi Dong

    Dr Zhi Dong is a senior lecturer from the School of Property, University of Auckland. She will be hosted by Professor Changchun Feng from the Centre of Real Estate Studies and Appraisals, Peking University.

     

    9. Professor Nikola Kasabov

    Professor Nikola Kasabov is the Director of Auckland University of Technology's Knowledge Engineering and Discovery Research Institute' (KEDRI). He will be hosted by Professor Ying Tan from the Key Laboratory of Machine Perception, Peking University.

     

    10. Associate Professor Sharyn Davies

    Associate Professor Sharyn Davies is an associate professor of Social Sciences at Auckland University of Technology. Sharyn Davies will be hosted by Professor Liu Aiyu from the Department of Sociology, Peking University.

    It is NZC’s great pleasure to welcome all ten visiting fellows to the NZC at Peking University during 2017, the 10th anniversary year of the Centre.

    Visiting Fellowships with the New Zealand Centre are granted annually.
