As part of The Beijing Review magazine, May 4, 2017 “Belt and Road Special: Coming a Long Way”, one of the New Zealand Centre at Peking University liaison interns, Matilda Gaby, was interviewed by Sudeshna Sarkar, a reporter of the magazine. Matilda is currently a visiting student at Peking University, studying Chinese for a year.
Beijing Review is China's only national weekly news magazine published in English. As a result of the interview, the article titled “The Linguistic Leap” discusses how Maori language and culture help boost New Zealand-China ties. Matilda is one among the many links—human, institutional, cultural as well as commercial—that has created a multi-faceted bond between China and the South Pacific nations. The New Zealand Centre was mentioned as being critical in “enhancing New Zealand’s profile in China, especially through academic exchanges.” In addition, in the past ten years since its founding in 2007, the New Zealand Centre at Peking University has been offering an annual English course “New Zealand History and Culture, in collaboration with a couple of New Zealand universities. This course provides Peking University students with insight into New Zealand society and history. Including Maori culture.

The article further goes on to discuss New Zealand’s signed agreement with China to cooperate on the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, also known as the Belt and Road Initiative.
