  • Former New Zealand Ambassador Michael Powles Visits PKU New Zealand Centre

     

    25/11/2019 Former New Zealand Ambassador to China Mr. Michael Powles visited New Zealand Centre at Peking University and had a meeting with some of the NZC staff and visiting academics of New Zealand universities.

     

    On 25 November 2019, Former New Zealand Ambassador to China Mr. Michael Powles was invited to visit New Zealand Centre at Peking University and had a meeting with some of the NZC staff and visiting academics of New Zealand universities.

    Mr. Michael Powles first visited New Zealand Centre, when Director of NZC Liu Shusen and Liu Hongzhong introduced the history and development of New Zealand Centre since 2007 and briefed the major events and activities NZC has organized in 2019. Then Head of the School of Humanities at Massey University, Associate Professor Kerry Taylor and Dr. William Shannon, International Partnerships Manager of the University of Canterbury joined the meeting with Former Ambassador Michael Powles, briefing what has been achieved in academic exchanges and collaboration with Peking Uiniversity, including the existing reciprocal study abroad programmes hosted by Peking University, Massey University and the University of Canterbury as well as the Rewi Alley Professor of New Zealand Studies programme to be established at Peking University in the near future. 


    Mr. Michael Powles donated a copy of New Flags Flying: Pacific Leadership, a book he co-edited with Ian Johnstone.

    Mr. Michael Powles was New Zealand Ambassador to China from 1990 to 1993.  He was Deputy Secretary of New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and then New Zealand Ambassador to the United Nations in New York. From 2005 to 2008 he worked as an Adjunct Professor at Fudan University while living in Shanghai. He is currently President of the New Zealand-China Friendship Society (Wellington).
