In his presentation “China-New Zealand Relations: Past, Present and Future”, Professor Liu Shusen, Director of New Zealand Centre, discussed the history and status quo of China’s engagement with New Zealand since the 1850s on the basis of some of his recent discoveries as China’s earliest coverage of New Zealand in English-Chinese newspapers and magazines published in China after the Opium War in 1840. According to his presentation, the earliest article on New Zealand that appeared in an English-Chinese bilingual newspaper in China is a reprint of the English coverage entitled “New Zealand Coal”, which was published in The North-China Herald (《北华捷报》) on 22 November, 1851. The original source of the coverage was The Auckland Independent on 6 Sept, 1851. The number of coverages and articles of various topics on New Zealand, which were published in China, reached its first peak in the 1930s, and then its second peak since 2010s. The statics indicates that those articles and coverages play an essential role for both the mutual understanding and bilateral relations between China and New Zealand.

Professor Liu Shusen also introduced the history and role of New Zealand Centre at Peking University in enhancing academic exchanges and collaboration between Peking University and eight New Zealand universities and helping build up a stronger and more productive relationship between China and New Zealand.
