  • Visiting Fellow Dr Danping Wang lectures at Peking University

24/10/2018 – Professor Yang Zhao, Dean of the School of Chinese as a Second Language hosted Dr Danping Wang from the Department of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics at the University of Auckland as a Visiting Fellow.

Dr Wang, a specialist in Chinese Language teaching, arrived at Peking University on 22 October 2018 on her five-day visit to Beijing as a Visiting Fellow to continue research collaboration with the School of Chinese as a Second Language. The relationship between the two faculties was established in 2011 and continues to grow. In 2011 the SCLS supported a research project on Classroom Language Policy Development, whereby Dr Wang observed their language classes for the purposes of data collection.

Following this collaboration, Dr Wang and Professor Zhang jointly gave a keynote speech at the 2014 international conference on Chinese Language Teacher Education held in Aarhus University, Denmark. They have since identified potential collaborative research projects, and discussed the development of post-graduate programs to train more professional Chinese language.

On 24 October Dr Wang presented her seminar entitled “Multilingualism and Translanguaging in Chinese Language Classrooms in New Zealand Universities”. She presented a critical review of medium-of-instruction (MoI) practices in Chinese language education within a New Zealand context. MoI is the language used to teach a language, which includes the target language (Chinese) and the students’ first languages (English). She discusses how certain fallacies concerning language teaching have impeded research on MoI policy, such as the monolingual fallacy (only using Chinese to teach Chinese, and forbidding English from the classroom), and discusses practical use of classroom language in English speaking countries. Thus she emphasizes that consideration of MoI is important for the development of pedagogical techniques and teacher education.

Chinese language learning is an emerging area of research and collaboration between China and NZ, and is vital to form deeper mutual understanding between the two countries. This fellowship has further enriched collaborative research with between the University of Auckland and Peking University, in the areas of teaching and teacher education, as well as policy development for better Chinese language education for both sides.
