  • On 15 April, 2016, the NZ Centre welcomed Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Tony Ballantyne and Mr. Simon Chu from the University of Otago. Professor Ballantyne is the Pro-Vice Chancellor in charge of Humanities at the University of Otago and an outstanding historian of the Modern British Empire. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2012.

Mr. Chu is the Director (International) of Te Whirika, International Office in the Division of External Engagement at Otago and has a background in facilitating international academic and student exchange.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Humanities Tony Ballantyne accompanied with Professor Liu Hongzhong and Professor Liu Shusen.

The Centre Director Prof. Liu Shusen and Associate Prof. Liu Hongzhong welcomed the guests at the Centre office. During the meeting, Prof. Ballantyne introduced the major fields of study in the Faculty of Humanities and showed a strong interest in seeking for new cooperation between the two universities. The two sides then discussed and explored a variety of possible ways of cooperation. These included student exchange, faculty cooperation and contributions to the NZ Centre Newsletter.

As a follow up to the former visit by the Vice Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne and Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Helen Nicholson to Peking University in October 2015, Mr. Chu and Prof. Ballantyne made a donation of academic books for the Centre library and promised more books following this visit. Among the books is Professor Tony Ballantyne’s monograph Entanglements of the Empire: Missionaries, Maori, and the Question of the Body, which was the New Zealand History Association’s Inaugural W. H. Oliver Prize in 2015. The Centre is very grateful for this generous effort which is sure to boost PKU students’ awareness of New Zealand and its people.

The New Zealand Centre looks forward to ongoing discussions and collaborations with the University of Otago in the future. The early collaborations included PKU’s students attending the intensive study abroad programmes in the summer schools at Otago in the years 2011 and 2012 and the participation and presentation of Professor John Knight of Otago at a seminar at PKU in November 2015, the theme of which is China-New Zealand Roadmap for Science and Technology Cooperation: Consumer Preference and Public Awareness of Food Safety.
