On 10 June 2016, an international symposium on movie and television translation was held at Communication University of China，as an integrated part of the 2016 Shanghai International Film Festival. Entitled “Movie and Television Translation Education and Talent Cultivation Symposium”，this high-level forum was well attended by over 100 participants, more than half of whom are from twentieth countries including India, Russia, the United States, France, Australia, Germany, Brazil, Canada, and Egypt. Organized by China’s Ministry of Culture and State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television, the symposium was co-hosted by the School of Foreign Languages and Communication Strategy of China Co-innovation Center at Communication University of China as well and New Zealand Centre at Peking University.

The goal of the symposium is to help promote academic study of movie and television translation, including dubbing and subtitling in translation, the professional training of translators specializing in movie and television translation, and exchanges and communication between professional translators and administrators in film and television industries across countries in the present age of globalization. The chief presenters of the symposium include Mr. Zhang Xin from the Ministry of Culture, Dean of School of Foreign Languages at Communication University of China Professor Li Zuowen, President of International Chinese Film Festival (Australia) Lanwei Gong, President of Chinese cinemas of Paris Deanna Gao, President of Sound & Vision India Mona Schetty, and Production Manager of DreamWorks (USA) Debra K. Chinn. Their presentations focus on not only undergraduate and graduate curriculums of movie and television translation as a discipline but also on policies of governmental management, strategies, and skills concerning the teaching and research of movie and television translation, in addition to exploring how to explore and develop the market of translated movies and television programmes.

The symposium was concluded by a wrap-up speech of Professor Liu Shsen of New Zealand Centre at Peking University, in which he especially highlights the thematic value and social significance of the symposium and the presentations by speakers from different countries and proposes the continuity of such symposiums on annual or biennial basis, as an international summit of exchanges and collaboration for educators, scholars, translators, managers, and governmental administrators respecting movie and television translation.
