  • On 13th June 2016, the NZ Centre welcomed a delegation from the city of Dunedin for a meeting to discuss current and future plans and collaborations. The delegation consisted of Dunedin Mayor Mr. Dave Cull, Dunedin City Council CEO Sue Bidrose and the Otago University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Nicholson. The University of Otago is New Zealand's most elite, and only, collegiate university. Professor Brian Moloughney of the University of Otago, the current visiting fellow hosted by the NZ Centre, also attended the meeting. On behalf of the University of Otago, Professor Helen Nicholson donated three news books on Maori history and culture to the NZ Centre in support of the building up of the Centre’s library and its annul course on New Zealand history and culture.

Professor Liu Shusen and Associate Professor Liu Hongzhong welcomed the guests at the Lakeside Villa.

The Centre Director Professor Liu Shusen and Associate Professor Liu Hongzhong welcomed the guests at the Lakeside Villa of Peking University. Professor Liu Shusen addressed the visitors with a brief introduction to the New Zealand Centre and its current projects within Peking University. Professors Liu Shusen and Liu Hongzhong updated the delegation on the developments concerning the upcoming annual undergraduate course New Zealand History and Culture as well as cooperative projects with New Zealand universities.

Official meetings covered a wide range of topics for future cooperation.

Other topics discussed in the meeting included the New Zealand Centre having access to a collection of e-books provided by the Dunedin Public Library to assist with the undergraduate course and for any interested Peking University students or faculty. This is especially pertinent to Dunedin as a UNESCO City of Literature, the proposed collection will include examples of literature from notable Dunedin authors and poets. The relationship with the University of Otago, as one of the eight partner universities with the NZ Centre, was also a talking point. Initiatives such as summer cultural and language exchanges for students from both universities were discussed as possibilities, as well as academic exchanges for researchers and faculty. As the University of Otago has its own publishing press there is also the opportunity for up-to-date academic literature exchange between the two universities. The meeting concluded with a brief tour of the New Zealand Centre office and the nearby Weiming Lake. The NZ Centre looks forward to an ongoing relationship with the Dunedin City Council and the University of Otago.
