  • The New Zealand Centre would like to thank Ms Helene Wong for her book donation. Her generous gifts are perfect addition to the current New Zealand Centre library collection and will make a great difference to future students who will be studying about New Zealand at Peking University.

Ms Helene Wong was born in New Zealand to parents whose families had emigrated few generations earlier. She graduated from Victoria University with a Bachelor of Arts Honours (First Class) in Sociology. After graduation, she worked in the Public Service for nine years including the period when Sir Robert Muldoon was the Prime Minister. Then, she travelled to the United States where she began to learn and practice theatre in Boston and San Francisco. When she returned to New Zealand, she continued to stay in the film and television field and became a freelance script consultant. Since then she has worked on variety of television dramas and short and feature-length films. She has written articles and book reviews, and has written and directed documentaries related to Chinese-Kiwi. She is now a full-time writer and occasional actor.

Ms Helene Wong visited the New Zealand Centre in 2012, when she came to Beijing to perform in a theatrical exchange between the Court Theatre in Christchurch and Peking University’s Institute of World Theatre and Film. She remembered about the New Zealand Centre library collection and decided to donate her recent work published by Bridget Williams Books (BWB), an award-winning publisher in New Zealand - Being Chinese: A New Zealander’s Story along with other books of the same theme by the same publisher. The book has been welcomed by a wide range of New Zealand readers.

The staff sincerely appreciate her thoughtful donation, and are also very delighted to receive a copy directly from the author. With the help of donations from supporters such as Ms Helene Wong we hope to share more about New Zealand with Peking University Chinese students. Thank you, Ms Helene Wong for the support. Thank you also to Bridget Williams Books for their support in making the delivery possible.

    - The Directors of the New Zealand Centre
