"In this lecture I shall discuss the theme of religious diversity as a global phenomenon, applying the issues raised and any lessons learned in the New Zealand experience to a wider context of modern secular societies that includes both New Zealand and China" - Professor Douglas Pratt
18/11/2014 - OPEN LECTURE: "Fundamentalism and Terrorism: Contemporary Religious Extremism" by Professor Douglas Pratt of Waikato University
"Religious extremism, and instances of violence and terrorism allied to it, is of particular concern in modern world. Secular societies are not immune from either direct or indirect involvement. Whenever we fly internationally we are subject to security measures that for the most part have been prompted by concern to prevent religiously motivated extremist acts. Most often, such religious extremism is identified as fundamentalist. But the history and identity of fundamentalism is complex. " - Professor Douglas Pratt
